Greetings from our President . . .
Good Day Sorors, Friends and Community Members:
Thank you for visiting the digital home of the Detroit Deltas. Since 1939, the Detroit Alumnae Chapter has served our community by meeting the needs of the day.
In 1947, we started the Delta Home For Girls and provided residential and treatment services to adolescent girls who were a part of the judicial system. In 1988, we dedicated Delta Manor, a 99 one-bedroom senior citizen housing complex that operates in downtown Detroit. In 2015, the Chapter was one of the first organizations to host an award-winning expungement fair that helped countless citizens to clear their records and walk past hurdles that hindered them for years. Our Chapter’s efforts were instrumental in the passing of the Clean Slate legislation to help make expungements easier.
The Detroit Deltas continue to service Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park and the Grosse Pointes through the Sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness. We are committed to continuing our legacy of service and meeting today’s needs during the 2025-2027 biennium by moving Forward Together with each other and the community.
If you are a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and looking for a chapter home, please consider joining Detroit Alumnae Chapter. We are a Chapter that is steeped in history while also setting new standards of service. We welcome you to join us at our monthly meetings held between October and June on second Saturdays beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Thank you again for visiting our website. We hope to connect with you in person soon.
In Delta Service,
Jenice Mitchell Ford, President

History
The Detroit Alumnae Chapter was chartered on May 13, 1939 as Alpha Pi Sigma Chapter and was renamed Detroit Alumnae Chapter in 1958. Detroit Alumnae, which celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2024, is one of the largest chapters in the Sorority with membership averaging more than 800 Detroit Deltas annually.
Chapter members have risen to serve on the regional and national levels of the Sorority. From 1971–1975, 14th DAC President Lillian Pierce Benbow served as the 15th National President. The 41st DAC President Lois E. Bingham was selected as the executive director of the Sisterhood. Most recently, the Rev. Dr. R. Janae Pitts-Murdock who was initiated into DAC in 2007, was appointed as the national chaplain.
Since its chartering, Detroit Deltas have instituted programs and projects that significantly benefited the residents of the city. These have included the Delta Home for Girls, which for more than 40 years housed young girls who had been removed from their homes by the courts, and the Detroit Delta Preparatory Academy for Social Justice, the nation’s first school created by a National Pan-Hellenic Council organization. An ongoing project is Delta Manor, a senior citizens apartment building serving residents since 1989.
Detroit Alumnae Chapter has been honored by the community and the Sorority. Beginning in 2013, Delta’s centennial year, DAC’s projects and artifacts were displayed in a gallery exhibit at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. DAC’s service was recognized by the Michigan Chronicle, which named Detroit Deltas their Newsmaker of the Year.
Over the years Detroit Deltas have won numerous awards at the state, regional, and national levels, including Midwest Region Large Alumnae Chapter of the Year in 2015 and 2017; Delta Dear of the Year, International Awareness and Involvement, and Economic Development Awards in 2018. The Chapter also placed as a finalist in multiple categories in 2019. In 2025, Midwest Soror of the Year was awarded to a Detroit Alumnae Member.
