Giving back is at the heart of what we do

The Detroit Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is committed to helping young people succeed academically. This includes ensuring that students have access to the financial resources they need to obtain a college education. The chapter offers eight (8) different awards through its scholarship program.

Scholarships are available to students attending a public, private, or parochial high school within the service areas of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter: Detroit, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Highland Park and the Grosse Pointes. To be eligible to receive an award, recipients must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 (out of a 4.0 scale) and enroll in a full-time program at an accredited college, university or equivalent during the specified academic year. Verification of enrollment must be provided.

In 1973, National President Lillian Benbow — a native Detroiter who served as president of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter from 1963 to 1965 — established the National Commission on Arts and Letters. The Arts and Letters Committee seeks to support its mission to raise awareness of the contributions African Americans have made to the arts. The committee promotes worthwhile cultural endeavors and artists through a variety of programs and activities. The Annual Art Auction highlights the work of African American artists while raising funds to provide college scholarships for local high school students. The annual Musical Legacy Concert, usually held during Black History Month, celebrates the impact African Americans have had in music, dance, drama, and poetry. The committee also coordinates and supports events such as Delta Red Carpet/theatre outings, concerts, plays, and book signings.

The major Initiatives of the National Commission on Arts and Letters are Delta Red Carpet, which supports films that are produced and performed by African Americans and feature positive stories; Deltas See Television (DSTv), which supports African American network and cable television shows and movies; Music Ministry, a database of professional musicians; Delta Authors on Tour (DAOT); and Pride in our Heritage.
